Saddened to learn of John's passing. I enjoyed his company in Scouting over many years. Always inviting and full of fun. He was a great mentor to many in Scouting. I remember with great joy, the many Scout Camps and Grand River Weekend canoe trips. Peace be with all the family at this time.

I was a member of the 107th Scout Troop growing up. Scout Leader Big John was one of the great characters in my life. One of my fondest memories was when he would mesmerize us with a haunting performance of Ghost Riders in the Sky around the campire at night. We would be captivated. He was a great man who generously donated his time to us punk kids. Rest in Peace John, you wil not be forgotten.

John at the 10 scouts, Canada jamboree Cabot Beach Prince Edward Island. I will remember going down my street selling popcorn for scout and knocking on John’s door. He asked me to do the scouts promise before he would buy popcorn from me.

My deepest condolences to Nesta, Marie, Peter and the entire Lacey family.
John will always be Mr. Lacey to me, he was literality a larger than life figure of my childhood. If you didn’t know John, you might have mistaken his commanding presence and deep baritone voice as intimidating or unapproachable. However, if you had the pleasure, you’d quickly figure out that you had it all wrong.
I don’t recall exactly when Peter introduced me to John and his family but I do remember two things vividly. First of all, when (we) he shook my seemingly tiny right hand, then my arm and then entire body, I never felt so small but in the same moment, so welcome in someone else home.
Secondly and even more engrained in my mind, is when I first heard it……. the most thunderous, genuine and heartwarming laugh know to all mankind. As he often did, I’m sure he was laughing at one of his owe wise-cracks and surely at Pete’s or my expense.
Another memory I can’t forget is that John gave me my first real nickname, “Big-Ugly” although not at all flattering coming from anyone else, but coming from him, I wore it as a badge of honour. Eventually this nick-name we shared as a common greeting between us, and now looking back, I suspect he may have just let me borrow it from the OGBU.
It was truly a one of kind laugh, for a one of kind man. Given John’s dedication to his Scout Troop, there are likely hundreds of adults around my age in the Windsor area that had similar, positive life experiences alongside John. The combination of his warm caring smile, authenticity and stern structured and sometime tough love, was exactly what I and I’m sure many others needed in those formative years. Some of my fondest outdoor memories were made with Peter and I, John as our guide, leader and mentor on the wild White River.
I look forward to telling my kids and hopefully their kids all about the legacy and stories of my ~Ten foot tall, international rugby playing, safari hunting, bushwhacking, bareknuckle boxer from across the pond.
Rest in peace my friend, you willed be dearly missed.
Sincerely,
Ross Baillargeon

My deepest condolences to Nesta and family.
First met John at Toronto airport Sep’ 1979 both of us waiting on a flight to Windsor and the GM transmission plant.
John’s height and accent were a magnet for strangers so we had no problem fitting in wherever we went. We were both here alone so we spent some weeks together viewing houses, cars and of course a few bars until Nesta and the kids arrived.
Shared a few moose hunting trips together, John was always great company! I’m sure he will be dearly missed by family and friends alike.
