I used to think of my Uncle Dale (Adel) as someone who had one foot in tradition and the other in being a free spirit wanting to do what he wanted. I was about 10 years old when he came to Canada and remember my mom Violet, his sister, excited that her little brother finally made it to Canada. Back then, immigration was more than welcome and not a controversy full of political battles. I remember thinking when I met my uncle that I wonder if he would ever settle down. When I was about 16, he looked at me and turned to my mom and said, "How old is she now?" Of course my mom didn't remember right away because there were so many of us it was like the little Lebanese lady who lived in a tiny bungalow with so many kids she didn't know what to know
. But then she answered back at my uncle that I was 16 years old. To that, Uncle Dale shot back with seriousness in his voice: "Time to send her to the old country to get married." I remember thinking I did not want to get married but I also didn't want to be home watching all my little brothers and sisters, so I pursued my education. But it was then that I realized that Uncle Dale longed to have his own family and roots, and how important family was to him. He went on to marry my beautiful aunt Hoda and had two wonderful sons who are carrying on his name, and their partners, as well as a gorgeous grandchild. Determined to see Uncle Dale while he was in the hospital rehabbing from his leg surgery, I was with my sister Jackie and he spoke to us about all the things he regretted in his past and how he couldn't wait to spend the rest of his years with his family being the best person he could be. In fact he was so positive and his sense of humor was as sharp as ever. I'm sorry it was just about 3 years left before Uncle Dale passed away - I know he tried hard to do what he could with his failing body and was determined to get the most out of the rest of his life. We'll miss you Hali (uncle in Lebanese and I think that's how you spell it!) And I am sorry I wasn't there to see you recently as family has been torn apart from covid. But I can bet there's no covid up in Heaven, so when people say 'God has a plan,' I'm sure it was because He wanted you to be with my mom Violet and my dad Elias, my brother Dale and all your other family in the upper world free of disease, hate and germs.
