Obituary of Joe Sobocan

SOBOCAN, Martin JOE b. July 3, 1932. Windsor, ON. d. December 15, 2019. 4th Son of the late John and Mary (Zelko) Sobocan. Predeceased by Rita Sobocan (2005). An awesome father, known as "Popps" to Tom, Martin, David and Jeff. Loving father-in-law to Karrie-Beth. He was an inspiration, mentor, guide, coach, wise teacher and unifier of our family. He was the best "Poppa Joe" ever to his grandchildren, Jenna and Mitchell. He loved spending time with them, sharing stories and watching their sports. Predeceased by his brothers and sisters-in-law: Mike (Rose), John (Margit – living), Steve (Clare), Vince (Corinne). Cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews. Joe was the secretary-treasurer and co-founder of Windsor Factory Supply Ltd. (June 14, 1955) with partners Jerry Slavik and Cliff Crutney. Joe and Jerry built an employee focused business and were early pioneers in employee ownership and profit sharing. They, along with their employees, built the premier industrial supply company in all of Ontario. It eventually grew to 6 locations across Ontario, and several satellite operations in automotive facilities. Joe was known for his zest for life. He had a great palate for appreciating a fine red wine. He loved getting together for delicious food and a Brandy Manhattan. Joe loved his sports. He played basketball and tennis. In his late 20's, he discovered golf and it became a huge passion for the next few decades. He cherished his membership at Essex Golf & Country Club where he oversaw the press tent during the 1976 Canadian Open. He organized many golf trips with friends. He learned to curl in the 70's and enthusiastically enjoyed the game. He played and later coached youth basketball. One of his teams went all the way to the finals of the national championships. He was a member of Toast Masters and Junior Achievement, as well as a Scout Leader. He was known for his smile, laughter, friendship and words of wisdom. Joe possessed an exceptional ability to listen to others. He was genuinely interested and concerned when he spoke with people. Heartfelt thanks to the staff at Met Hospital, the team at the Dr Y. Emara Centre and the nursing staff at Lifetimes.
