Thomas, Martin, David and Jeff... my belated sympathies to you all. I was deeply saddened to learn of Joe’s passing during the holidays and regret not having the opportunity of sitting down with you gentlemen in person and try and put into words how your dad and the WFS experience changed me, and made me a better man… a better person. Jerry and Joe both had a hand in shaping an entire generation of young leaders in the 70’s and 80’s, but your dad had a way about him that is hard to define. He knew how to get into your head and your heart like few people (both at the shop and on the golf course). I was so fortunate to work alongside some extraordinary fellow staffers, and stand with them on the shoulders of these visionaries. I am certain we all feel the same sense of loss. You need to know, their vision of what a company can be lives on in all of us, and the words Joe used to nudge us along are with me to this day. “First is worst” will make anyone working in the late 70’s and early 80’s smile. He was one of a kind and a blessing in my life. I would also like you to know that after almost fifty years in the industrial supply chain I now have been afforded an opportunity to teach part-time at the Business School at Fanshawe College and have brought your father into more lectures on Organizational Behavior that you can imagine. His style of passionate, heartfelt leadership now lives in a very small way, in the minds of future leaders from Canada and around the world. What a legacy. Joe Sobocan made me a better thinker, a better father, and certainly a better leader. He taught us all the value of service, respect, and self expression. He valued the differences in us, appreciated some of the competition between us and most of all, he relished in our successes both at the shop and every step we took thereafter. How fortunate am I to have been in the right place at the right time in 1973. I am heartbroken. Warmest regards. Michael and Joanne Oden

Sincere sympathy to the family. Joe was an incredible person. I fondly remember the birthday & anniversary calls. When I didn’t know him very well, I can recall a memory of telling him that his sweater was on inside out to which he replied, Yes I know. He never changed it! He truly had the “recipe” for living life.

Sending love and condolences to the family. The 7/3 club has lost a great member. Will always remember the WFS events fondly (fireworks and Christmas!) which would not be possible without his hard work.

Our sincerest condolences to my wonderful cousins and extended family. Uncle Joe will be missed! As a recent memory of him, I treasure the time, effort and thoughtfulness that Uncle Joe would call my mom Corinne every Thursday - she enjoyed their talks very much. I think of the Sobocan brothers all together now, and they are singing and playing ball! Thinking of you...Ann-Marie, Pete, Megan and Austin

My earliest memory of Joe was as a very young girl at a Windsor Factory Supply Christmas party. It was the best - a one pound box of chocolates and a present. Joe was always waiting at the end of the line to make sure you liked your gift. He was always thinking about what would make the kids happy and what he could do to make sure it happened. He was like this his entire life and for that we are grateful he made so many kids have a great time. Thank you, Joe. We will have lots of thought and memories to share with "the boys". - Mary Slavik

As part of Windsor Factory Supply's large family, I feel very fortunate to have known Joe. I remember someone saying to me when I got hired - "you will be a 'Jerry guy' or a 'Joe guy', depending on your personality". While both men were wonderful beyond words, I easily gravitated towards Joe. His infectious smile, corny humour and his insistence on always putting your best foot forward (both personally and professionally) really struck a chord with me. His ability to intently listen and the thoughfulness of his replies were always reassuring if not, at times, comical. He would be happy to know that countless nuggets of his "wisdom" have stuck with me through the years and have been used and passed on many times over. I am lucky to have them... In my experience, Joe was a model of honesty, integrity, hard work and above all, kindness. A man who savoured life's little nuances. All my best to his family, friends and Windsor Factory Supply pupils. Robert Plante

My dad, Ed Plante, was one of Joe’s employees. He spoke often of Joe’s kindness and genuine interest in everyone he met. My father died several years ago, at this same time of year, and in his obituary we mentioned Windsor Factory Supply and quoted him that this was “the best job I ever had.” On behalf of my family, I send our condolences and our thanks to a wonderful man.
