McKernan, Rev. Kenneth Bernard CSB
September 27, 1937 – August 7, 2019
Died peacefully in Windsor, Ontario on August 7th, 2019 with loving family by his side. He was a Basilian for 63 years and served in priestly ministry for 52 years. Kenneth McKernan was born in Detroit, Michigan. Predeceased by his parents John and Amy (Nee McConkey) and his brothers John, Joe (Joan), James, and sister Doreen (Bill Bishop). Survived by his sister Marilyn Venney. Also Survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins in whose joys and sorrows he prayerfully shared.
Ken graduated from Assumption High school in Windsor in 1955, He earned a B.A. in history from Assumption University in 1960 and an M.A. in 1963 from the University of Rochester. He also received an STB from St. Michaels College, in Toronto, in 1967. Ken joined the Congregation of St. Basil in 1956 and was ordained in Assumption Church Windsor on December 10, 1966.
Because during his novitiate Ken enjoyed the privilege of studying theology in Paris it followed that during the first many years of his teaching career, he was primarily the French teacher. In his later years of teaching he had the great joy of focusing on issues of morality and sharing his developing knowledge with the young people he so dearly loved. Kenneth had the following appointments in the Congregation : St. Basil’s Novitiate, Rochester 1956-1957, Assumption University 1957-1960, Aquinas Institute 1960-1963, St. Basil’s Seminary 1963-1964, Maison Saint-Basile 1964-1966, Aquinas Institute 1967-1969, Catholic Central High School Novi, MI. 1969-1984, Bishop O’Dowd High School Oakland, CA. 1984-1988, Sabbatical 1988-1989, Catholic Central High School Novi, MI. 1989-2009, O’Connor House 2009-2015, Associated with Our Lady of the Assumption Parish 2015-2019.
Visitation for Fr. Kenneth will be at WINDSOR CHAPEL (Central Chapel) 1700 Tecumseh Rd. E. 519-253-7234 on Tuesday August 13, 2019 from 3-5pm and 7-9pm. Vigil prayers at 7:30 PM. Fr. Kenneth will Lie In State on Wednesday August 14, 2019 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church (834 Raymo Rd., Windsor) from 11am until the time of the Mass of Resurrection at 12 noon, which will be presided by Rev.
