Obituary of Julio Bustos
The family of Julio Antonio Bustos Madrid shares the news of his passing on Thursday, July 11, 2024. Julio passed peacefully in his sleep from complications of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Born in Santiago, Chile in 1947, he immigrated with his family to Canada in 1990 to commence a new chapter of their lives in Windsor, Ontario. Julio's life journey was characterized by his steadfast resilience and unwavering determination to create the best future for his family, a mission he was greatly successful in.
Julio worked as a custodian at the University of Windsor and Casino Windsor. After his retirement, he took up a passion for cooking, learning new recipes from his favourite Chilean YouTube chef Alvarro Barriente. He made delicious empanadas y pan amasado, and was very proud of his banana bread. He had a life-long love for mathematics and puzzles, and was rarely seen without his Sudoku book.
Julio had a broad range of passions, from discussing politics to singing Spanish love songs to himself - his family gracefully listened to both. In 1996, the Chilean football team qualified for the World Cup, and Julio got cable for the Bustos household to watch this game. Everyone benefited from this decision.
He encouraged his children to dream big and give their best and was very proud of his wife's artistic creativity and her determination. He loved his family dearly and cherished adventures with his wife, often driving along Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie and visiting the Detroit River to enjoy their favourite ice cream at Stop 26 Ice Cream Shop.
He is survived by the love of his life, Teresa de Jesus Bustos, his wife of 52 years, who he charmed at a bus stop in Santiago. He was known to his children as Tete and Plullio, loving nicknames they had for him. He will be missed by his son Pablo and husband Jason of Rochester, New York, and their dog Randall; and daughter Claudia and husband Craig of Richmond, California, and their dog Bruce. He reminds his family, ‘los queremos y lo sabemos’. He will be missed by sisters-in-law Ruth, Sara, Raquel, and Yolanda, and brother-in-laws Juan - who was also his best friend in life - and Manuel. He will be missed by his nieces and nephews in Chile, Ontario and Michigan.
We take solace in knowing that he will be reunited with his father, mother, and sister Susanna, and brothers Lorenzo and Licho in heaven. Julio will be reunited with his beloved German Shepherd, Lupo, and his stillborn daughter, Maria Teresa.
Julio and his family would like to extend their gratitude to his medical team, including Dr. Anais, and the compassionate support staff from the Windsor Hospice, who provided Julio with at-home care, creating a peaceful and compassionate environment during his transition from this life to the next. The Bustos family would also like to extend their heartfelt thanks to their neighbourhood friends Wayne, Lisa, Paul and Tim who provided a united community of support for Teresa.
Memorial donations in Julio’s name can be made to the Hospice of Windsor. Alternatively, treat yourself to a Tim Horton’s double-double and sausage, bacon, and egg biscuit in his honor. At the time of his passing, he insisted that Tim Horton’s coffee was the best, and we will not argue with him in his honor.
Cremation has taken place as per Julio's wishes. A memorial visitation will take place at WINDSOR CHAPEL (Central Chapel) 1700 Tecumseh Rd E. (519-253-7234) on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 from 11:00am - 1:00pm. A funeral service will take place in the chapel at 1:00pm. Interment at Victoria Memorial Gardens.
