Obituary of Victoria Jacob
JACOB, Victoria Marie (Vickie)
Departed for her rightful place in heaven on May 23, 2023 after a fulfilling and wonderful life of 91 years where she now takes her eternal place next to Phillip, her cherished husband of 67 years. She is the loving mother of Mickey (Dianne) Jacob of Tampa FL and Donna (Doug) Newton of Windsor and treasured and proud Grandma of United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal Phillip (Hadley) Jacob of Tampa FL, and United States Air Force Major Ryan Marshall of Fort Walton Beach FL. Reunited with her parents Leopold and Amelia Scurk, she leaves behind her sister Lillian (the late Joseph) Hengl and sister-in-law Julia (the late Robert) Reddam along with numerous nieces, nephews and scores of friends.
A native of Windsor born to immigrant parents from Slovenia, she grew up in the East end and after graduating from high school, began her brief business career working at Hotel Dieu Hospital. It was at that time she met the dashing Phillip and was immediately smitten, however as was her alluring demeanor, she made him work hard to properly court her, finally resulting in marriage on October 1, 1952. Their life together started with financial and employment challenges but through it all she remained resolute, positive and diligent that all would work out. With Phil obtaining his new job at Chrysler Canada (maker of fine cars, trucks, vans and Jeeps as he would remind you) they began their adventure of being transferred across Canada to North Bay ON, Brampton ON, back to Windsor ON, Vancouver BC and finally returning to Windsor ON where they resided since 1971. Through it all, Vickie was the “rock” of the family who independently adapted to numerous life situations, whether having to coordinate moving a household at a moment’s notice, digging the car out of a snowdrift, driving the kids to sports practices at all hours, cooking special treats (in particular krofi, palacsinta and potica) or consoling an upset 1st grader who lost his valentines cards for his class on the way to school - she taught us all how to live life with purpose, elegance, dignity and humility. She learned to constantly sit with Phil to view sports on TV, but she really loved to watch Donna at her figure skating training and competitions. She took up golf and immediately became a passionate participant (never missing an opportunity to remind Mickey she had more “hole-in-ones” than he did). She also found enjoyment going to “card club” with the girls and took great pride in keeping their home a beautiful and comfortable place that always had the wonderful aroma of good food cooking!! Vickie and Phil were a fixture for decades at Lakewood Golf Club where they pursued their love of golf and shared numerous gatherings and life celebrations with friends and family.
Upon retirement Vickie and Phil wintered in Lakeland FL where she became a respected and popular member of their community, an avid and tournament winning golfer, as well as a doting grandma who seized every opportunity to babysit (and spoil!!) grandson Phillip. Always a gracious and generous hostess, you would never leave the Jacob home hungry, thirsty or without a smile. Additionally, Vickie enjoyed being fashionable (in particular on the golf course) was always “dressed to the nines” and loved wearing her colorful scarves. Vickie is the epitome of a life well lived. Her quiet and gracious demeanor set an example for us all and no matter what the situation, she was there to support, advise and encourage. The many lifelong friends and cherished memories she created are testament to how deeply and graciously she touched people’s lives. She was truly an angel on earth and now has earned her “wings” in heaven. We will smile when we think of her.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday June 17, 2023 at the Windsor Chapel (Banwell Chapel) 11677 Tecumseh Road East (519-253-7234) beginning with visitation at 10am and service at 11am.
