Obituary of Leo Baillargeon

Baillargeon - Leo Joseph

July 8,1930 - Feb 4, 2023

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Leo, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather on February 4, 2023 at the age of 92 years. Loving husband of Rosina (Rose) Louise (Nee Mayea), for 69 years.  The son of the late Francois (Frank) Baillargeon of Sandwich South and Louise (Janisse) of Maidstone.

Most precious father of Gregory (Cindy Knight), Morgan, Annette Shuttleworth (late Tom 2002) and Mary-Anne.
Much loved grandfather of Kim, Melanie (Jim), Jesse, Jolene, Melissa (Jay), Megan (Tim) and David.  Cherished great-grandfather of Emilie, Abby, Tristan, Nathan, Owen and Alex.

Beloved brother of the late Lucien (late Florence), the late Jean-Marie (John), the late Adrien and Leo's late twin-sister Leora. Son-in-law of the late Arthur Mayea and the late Louise (Nee Morand). Survived by his sister-in-laws: Yvonne Hergott (Nee Mayea), Shirley Baillargeon and Mary-Dee MacPherson.   Brother-in-law of the late Arthur Mayea
(Junior), the late Robert Hergott, the late Elenor and the late Sylvia. Dear father-in-law of the late May (Nee Matthys).

Dear uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Leo was raised in Sandwich South (Tecumseh) and attended grade school at École St-Pierre.  He attended high school at Sacred Heart College in Sudbury, Ontario for 3 years, where he played on the school’s lacrosse team.  He completed his grade 12 at night school in Windsor.

After completing high school Leo worked at A & P and at East Side Plating.  When he got married, his father offered him the opportunity to go into partnership with him running the Shell gas station.  Frank and Leo Baillargeon operated the longest continuously owned Shell gas station in Southwestern Ontario (79 years).  Leo retired from the service station in 2001 at the age of 71.  He SO MISSED the nightly gatherings of local regulars and friends at the station over a coffee!!

During his lifetime, he served on the School Boards of  St. Peter and St. Mark Elementary Schools, the Ste. Anne Parish Committee, the McAuliffe Park Board, as well as the Ste. Anne Cemetery Board.  He served as a lay minister, along with his wife Rose, at Ste. Anne Church in Tecumseh, bringing communion to the sick for over 21 years.  Leo LOVED his grandkids and great- grandchildren.
They where his pride and joy.  Leo's greatest passion was doing genealogy research.  Many years were spent in the archives of the French Canadian Society.

The familty wishes to thank Deacon Roy and Virginia Brothers for bringing communion for both Leo and Rose these past few years. We would also like to thank Father Patrick Beneteau, Leon Janisse and the Windsor Chapel Staff (Banwell location) for their compassion and excellent service. A special thank you to the nurses from LHIN, Laura and the 5th floor staff at WRH Met Campus and the PSWs - especially Marcus - who took excellent care of Leo.

At Leo's request, cremation has taken place. A private memorial service was held at Windsor Chapel followed by interment of his cremated remains at St. Anne Cemetery. Online condolences and cherished memories may be shared with the family at www.windsorchapel.com
