Mr. Wachowiak (Mr. DUBBS) was my grade 8 teacher. I can't believe this. I'm 36 now so it's been a while but still remember the energy and charisma this man filled the room with. Rest in power dude. You'll be missed forever.

I was deeply saddened to hear of your loss. I worked with Carl many years ago when we were both beginning teachers at St. Bernadette and at that time he had his curly hair. He was such a lovely, caring person. We were sad to see him leave the elementary panel but knew he was passionate about drama and needed to take the opportunity to be in high school. He was such an asset to the school because he was so gentle and kind. I am so sorry for your loss. We will be keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers.

Jessie and I are truly saddened to hear of Carl’s passing. Carl did a lot for me in helping me to get my career started in teaching and with his theatre company. I am forever grateful for the opportunities he gave me when nobody else would give me a start. Carl, I will always remember your passion for the theatre and education and how you tried to make Barrie a place where drama could thrive. Our deepest condolences to Naomi and all of their children. We hope Carl is finally at peace.

Today we have lost a son, brother , husband, dad, nephew, son in law , brother in law , nephew He is also remembered by teachers , former students and dear friends to all who knew Carl . As a teen Carl enjoyed his teen age years , had many friends and did the usual teenage stuff but always keeping up with his studies . He attended the University of Windsor and completed teachers college and met his wife Naomi . His teaching career took him to Barrie Ontario where he taught his passion for theatre , and was known for his excellent plays . His dad Michel and I were so proud of his accomplishments and we were front and centre on opening nights . Later in his life he became very ill with the same kidney disease as his mom Mariette . Miraculously , his loving wife , Naomi was a match and Carl received one of his wife’s kidneys . However it didn’t last and the last few years Carl suffered immensely . His wife and children were his life , now they have an angel in Heaven . Rest In Peace Carl .

My condolences to the entire Wachowiak family. I thought you may like this story just to give you a glimpse into the Mr. Wachowiak I knew. Through a host of rules and regulations, I was unable to play sports for my senior year after switching schools. Most kids in their final year will take drama as simply a grade-booster, I myself didn’t have too many options. But Mr. Wachowiak made class so much more than that. His class was always in first period and I would throw it up against any cup of coffee for getting you the energy you need to start the day.
There then came a time where Mr. Wachowiak had asked me to prepare a song as part of my audition for the school musical. I did, he seemed to be happy when I left the room, and so I went about my business. The next day he pulls me to the side and says “Adam, we love you for the part. How would you feel about doing a spoken-word monologue instead of your solo?” To this day that is the nicest way anyone has ever told me I’m a terrible singer.
Again, my deepest condolences to all of the family. I just wanted to show that even if he was only in your life for a brief time, Carl could leave an impression that lasts a lifetime.

Carl was such bright light and amazing human. My first memory of him was watching him in my dad's plays at CCH. He was talented, funny and kind. He made a lasting impression on everyone he met. My dad loved him as a student and it grew into a beautiful friendship. My mom loved Carl. She lit up whenever she talked about him. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Such a terrible loss.

We have lost a wonderful and kind soul in Carl, a favourite former student, very talented and funny guy. He was a part of one of my most memorable classes with some of my favourite students at CCH. He was a terrific actor in high school and Theatre Alive. Carl suffered greatly in his latter years. I will deeply miss him.

Carl truly was a gift to the JOA community and all of us who had the great fortune of being around him. He touched the lives of so many students and created a safe space for young people to go to when they felt like they didn't belong. He put his heart and soul into his art and he was so much fun to be around. Rest in peace, my friend. Sincere condolences and prayers to the Wachowiak family.

As an Educational assistant who had the privilege of working with Carl I wanted to share some memories of what a fun loving man he was. Carl was always warm and welcoming to me and all of the special needs students in his class. I remember hearing all about the amazing plays at JOA and was excited to finally see one in action. Carl brought out the best in the students, he pushed them to share their talents and he used his expertise to create wonderful stage productions. I remember staying late to help paint the set of legally blonde and volunteer the night of the show, the school came alive on production night. There was one of our special needs students who absolutely loved being in his class and when Carl saw an opportunity to make his day he let the student climb in the golf cart and ride around inside the school, laughter often filled the air when Carl was around. My husband and I even bought tickets to see Rent at Georgian college theatre because we knew it would be a great show if Carl was involved. He will be sadly missed but remembered always.

I remember a charming little boy who haltingly spoke French and English. He was a sweet child and grew to be a talented thespian and singer. Independently, he learned to play the piano as well. I was and will always be proud to know that I was chosen to be his godmother. With much love, ma tante Pat

Soft spoken 'Drama Boy' became anyone once he stepped on stage.
As a colleague, Carl was always easy to converse with and 'truly listened'.
In the early days of JOA, Carl coached both soccer and some track & field. True!
That is... until the Drama Program took off at JOA and Carl helped create some of the greatest high school productions I have ever scene.
The 'Helicopter Scene' in Ms. Saigon still gives me ( and many others) 'CHILLS'!
A couple of memories...
*When I talked to Mr. Wachowiak about not having 'reserved seating' at JOA performances and how it drove me nuts when people would 'save seats', Carl had a student meet my family and I at the door and bring us to our 'reserved seats' where roses awaited us.
*The very first year at JOA, Carl was the 'STAR' of the teacher skit as he bounced around as the overbearing gym teacher and had the crowd in stitches! Amazing!
Miss ya My friend.
