As a young kid, moving into a new neighbourhood can be an unsettling experience. New home, friends etc are daunting prospects for adults, let alone little humans. My brother Dave and I immediately set upon our new domain and found friends quickly in the form of John Jr and Ed.
I remember the first time I met 'Mr Tomac' (called him that all my life btw) who despite being vertically challenge, seemed like a giant to this little 6 year old. He's the first person I'd ever met who sounded different, or had a tattoo. He said he's from a country far far away, the name sounded mystical. I thought he must be an explorer, or perhaps adventurer, turns out he was both. Throughout most of my life's big events he was there, along with Mrs Tomac, (yup...still call her that as well) and his passing is both sudden and sad. However I'll always remember this 'giant', who treated me and my brothers with respect, looked after us, set us straight when we were little sh#ts and lived a full rich life.
