Mr & Mrs Reynolds and Family. On behalf of the staff at the Muck Crops Research Station we send our deepest condolences to each of you. We enjoyed our time with Steven as he conducted his grad research work at the Muck Station. His attention to detail and love of things plants was second to none. Steven always showed respect and a willingness to learn as we worked with him. His sense of humor was a added bonus.

I have known Stephen since he was an undergraduate, and had the privilege of instructing him in a few of his courses. He was shy and reserved in class, but also extremely bright. I was delighted when he decided to pursue graduate school, and it was always a pleasure encountering him in the hallways. He was usually wearing a white lab coat and looking very science-y, and always with that shy smile on his face. Losing him is a terrible blow to so many of us here in the Department of Plant Agriculture – it has affected us profoundly. He was a truly beautiful person, and he will be deeply missed. My sincerest condolences to his family, and to all who were blessed to have him in their lives.

I met Stephen when he was doing his experiments in Plant Genomics lab. He is one of the best graduate students that I have known. He was always asking questions on how to improve his experiments and always working very hard towards achieving his goals. He was very humble, knowledgeable, fun to work with and kind. He will be sorely missed by all us at Plant Agriculture department (U of G). My deepest condolences to his family.

Stephen was a bright soul! I met him (& his lab mate Sara) at a research conference in 2018 in Boston, my first time on the east coast coming all the way from Oregon. I met him and Sara accidentally while waiting in line for food & got very lucky! We chatted about many things but what I will miss the most is his sense of humor and smile. Miss you bud!!

Stephen was a dear friend and a great collogue. When I moved to Guelph, I did not have any friends. He welcomed me with kindness and quickly became a close friend. He was supportive, kind, and funny. He loved his family, plants, pollinators, music, red wine, cooking, and walking in Arboretum. He was a great listener. Every time I was frustrated with my research, he would cheer me up with a joke. He loved to make people laugh. He asked me to teach him some funny Persian words so he could surprise the Iranians in the department. He even communicated with my mom with those few words when she came to Canada for my defense. He could make everyone laugh even in a foreign language.
It was a pleasure to have him as a friend. He will be always in my heart.

Stephen welcomed me into the lab and showed me the ropes. I followed in his footsteps, and built several of my experiments from his design. He was so clever and willing to share and help everyone. Always preferring to be in the background, he was difficult to photograph. I especially enjoyed driving to the research station with him, because then we were able to talk (unless a good song came on, then we had to stop talking and start singing). My favourite memory is our trip to Boston together where we ate mussels and explored the city together. He is dearly missed.

Stephen was a close friend while I did my master’s at the University of Guelph. He welcomed me into the lab and helped me to navigate the start of grad school. I have so many fond memories of long hours in the lab and trips to the field with him. He was always a lot of fun to be around. We bonded over a shared love of Lord of the Rings and one time when he noticed that another lab had the eye of Sauron on their door, he had the idea for us to sneakily start adding more and more pictures from the movies to their door. His witty jokes always made me laugh and I always cherished our talks about world news. He will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to the family.

My sincerest condolences to the Reynold’s family and his friends, colleagues and community that will undoubtedly grieve this loss deeply. It was heartbreaking to learn of Stephen’s passing. Stephen was a friend and fellow student in Plant Ag. He was incredibly kind and generous with help and knowledge. Having already completed his own PHD qualifying exams when I was starting to prepare for mine, Stephen provided me with guidance on multiple occasions regarding how to approach the exam. His positive and relaxed energy was and is incredibly important to me in my memories of that time. He was always very welcoming, easygoing and without exception, extremely lovely to be around. I was shocked and saddened to hear of his passing but I am also very grateful for the memories of camaraderie and of seeing his beaming smile in the halls of crop sci. on many occasions.

Dear Mr and Mrs Reynolds. I offer my sincere condolences with the passing of Stephen. I remember when he first came into my office, head full of curly hair, asking all kinds of questions about graduate studies. Then once he had submitted his application, he checked in regularly to make sure all his documents were in order. He was a very gentle spoken and conscientious graduate student. This is so sad. Stephen was always a kind and tender hearted person. I remember bonding over a love for nature and laughing at goofy dad jokes. Highschool wasn't my favorite time, but sometimes just a shared reassuring glance exchanged gave a certain sense of peace. In those moments no words were necessary. I will be praying for you Reynolds family. The world lost a great soul, but heaven gained him.

I am so shocked and saddened to hear of Stephen's passing. Stephen was my teaching assistant in 2019 at the University of Guelph. I wish his family and friends peace at this terrible time. I hope that, in time, his memory will bring a smile rather than tears. Sincerely, Manish Raizada, University of Guelph
