John and I are first cousins. His father and my mother Elizabeth Berek were brother and sister. I'm very grateful I had the opportunity to meet John at the Berek family reunion in Chicago. My sincere condolences to his loved ones.

I was fortunate to spend a week of training in Toronto with John and so we ate dinner together each night.. I knew John from other meetings with the board but never really spoke to him before this week long course. His gracious hospitality and wry sense of humour made him good company and a great storyteller.
That week has forever changed the way I lead grace before meals at functions. I usually speak of my friend John in the intro citing “he would eat a little before he prayed so he would know just how thankful he was for the food”. That puts everyone at ease even the nibblers and we enjoy the meal much more fully because those who laugh together are blessed.
I have no doubt that Divine arms embrace John just as surely as his own heavenly presence surround his beloved Colleen and his cherished family.
My heartfelt love and condolences are given to Colleen, the family and all the friends and colleagues who loved him.

I worked with Dr. Berek for years at the Windsor Probation Office. He was undoubtedly one of my favourite people to work and interact with. We engaged in countless conversations on a wide variety of topics and many times our talks resulted in a book recommendation from him. Dr. Berek was not only kind but also intelligent and patient. He provided a reference for me so I could pursue my graduate degree and I am forever grateful to him. I was saddened to hear he became ill. I extend my prayers and loving thoughts to his wife, children and family members. Our clients were lucky to experience his wisdom, guidance and support.
Rest in peace John,

I entered the Jesuits a year behind John, and was fortunate to know him as a deeply profound and caring person. When John was in Cincinnati and I was there also, he had a VW Bettle, and was heading up to Chicago for Christmas. I asked if I could join, and we had the most enlightening 6 hour drive, discussing everything from how the wind moves the VW to whether there wasa meaning behind pain and suffering to did God have a plan for all of us. I always admired John and will keep him in my thoughts and prayers, as will other ex-Jesuits who knew John.

John hired me in my first job in the field of psychology and subsequently married my best friend, Colleen and they have been both cherished friends and my family here in Windsor for the past 39 years. I have been so enriched by knowing John who mentored and guided me as a psychologist and as a person and I will miss his wisdom, kindness, generosity and dedication to others. But as we say good-bye let us remember:
"Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us everyday. Unseen, unheard, but always near. Still loved, still missed."
Rest well my friend!
Love MB

Dr. Berek was an absolute joy to have at the Leamington Probation and Parole Office. He was adored by countless clients who gained so many coping skills to manage difficult lives. He was thoughtful, kind, and loved his career. The last time I ran into Dr. Berek in public, we were in line at Indigo. He was purchasing a book to read for an upcoming vacation. We miss his presence daily here and I will continue to think of Dr. Berek in every random act of kindness I initiate moving forward. Sincerely,
Katelynn Dunwoody

When I visited Caelin in Ontario back in 2017 John very much helped me, then a hapless Englishman abroad, feel at home by taking me to a local Anglican church service. I was immensely grateful then and cherish the memory of his kindness to this day. It is such a wonderful example of what a warm and thoughtful man he was. My deepest condolences.
