Herbie was my next door neighbour for nearly 22 years. He was a lot of fun, loving to share his many jokes with me. Like me he loved to garden, giving me big fat onions, and tomatoes. He would walk his dog, Radar, every day. He knew I was afraid of Radar and he laughed and said, 'So am I. It's Betty (his wife) that Radar loves!' I'll never forget a line he told me once some years ago about drinking. He said, 'I used to drink, but now I'm drinking from a different fountain.' He was, of course, referring to his belief in Jesus Christ, who was his personal Saviour. He put a face of a man made of wood on his back fence, near his gate. It has a baseball hat on. After a while the paint deteriorated so my husband painted the wood for him. Each year I would buy him a Canadian flag for him to fly on his flagpole in the backyard. He loved to make bird houses and my husband has at least one of them. He and Betty used to sit on their front porch in good weather watching 'the world go by'. I would sometimes go and sit on their step and chat with them. The last time I saw him was more than a year ago when he went to live in a nursing home in Woodslee. I asked him if I could give him a kiss, and he readily complied. I made him a prayer shawl to keep him warm in his wheelchair. As another of our neighbours said, 'He was one of the good ones!' And he was. But we know where he is since he began drinking from a different fountain. Herbie, don't tell your jokes to St. Peter--he might not get them! :) But I know that won't prevent God from letting you into Heaven! We love you, Herbie, and will miss you always. Rest in Peace Love, Joannie
