I haven’t spoken to Derek in several years and was shocked to hear of his sudden passing. Derek was full of life and endless stories, and gave this American an education on our neighbors in Canada. Embarrassingly, he knew more about American politics than I did, and inspired me to be passionate about my freedoms. Derek left an enormous impact on my life over the few years we were close. Although our time was tumultuous and not a time I’m proud of, I can say that he taught me how much loyalty and family meant to him and what it should mean to me. Also, God was able to use that time to turn my mess into a message and to heal me mentally and spiritually - i am grateful for it. I pray that he also was on a similar journey and that he is now fully healed and at the side of his Heavenly Father and savior, Jesus Christ. I wish to extend my deepest and sincerest condolences to his wife, Jackie, and especially to Hailey and Ashton to whom he loved beyond measure. Also, I would like to send my sympathy to his mother, Alice, as well as his brother, Dwayne - I cannot imagine the grief you must be in- finally, sympathies to the rest of his family and friends.
