Obituary of Giovanni Piunno

Born in San Giovanni in Galdo, Italy, son of the late Antonio and Giuseppina Piunno, and son-in-law of the late Luigi and Incoronata Di Donato. Passed away peacefully at Hospice of Windsor surrounded by his loving family. Devoted husband of 59 years to Lucia. Cherished father to Antonio (Lora) and Gino (Anna). Beloved Nonno to Andrea (Joe), Paolo, Gianni, Daniel and Bis-Nonno to Navia and Gabriel. Waiting to welcome him into Heaven with open arms is his great-granddaughter Mia Zagar. Loving brother to Emilia (the late Cirillo D"Amico), Domenico Piunno (Rose), Giovanna (Nicola Di Gioia), Arnaldo Piunno (Elba), and in Italy, Filomena (the late Pietro Geremia) and brother-in-law to Maria (the late Giovanni Di Girolamo) and the late Pasquale Di Donato (the late Rosanna). He leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews. Giovanni left Italy in pursuit of a better life. He first moved to Venezuela and later immigrated to Canada where he and his wife raised their sons. He was a hard worker at home and in his career at Dominion Forge. Nonno Gianni loved to bargain hunt, garden, make his own wine and prosciutto and was a diehard fan of the Montreal Canadiens. He loved spending time with his family and was greatly appreciative, proud and happy of the life he made for himself. He had a wonderful sense of humour and a positive outlook on life constantly reminding those closest to him to take chances, make the best of each situation and to always move forward with the hope of even better things to come! He will be missed deeply, loved always, and never forgotten. Visitation will be held at WINDSOR CHAPEL (South Chapel) 3048 Dougall Ave 519.253.7234 on Sunday, September 17, 2017 from 2-5 7-9pm. Parish Prayers will be at 4pm. Funeral services to take place on Monday, September 18, 2017 at 10:15am from the funeral home to St. Angela Merici, 980 Louis Avenue, for Funeral Mass at 11am. Entombment to follow at Heavenly Rest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County where staff and volunteers provided exceptional care to Giovanni and our entire family during his time of need. A special thank you to nurse Gina for her special in-home care.
