Obituary of Ronald George Varley

VARLEY, Ronald "Ron" George74 years of age, of Windsor on May 25, 2017. Beloved husband of Marie Rose "Mary" Varley (nee: Montpetit) of 51 years. Loving father of Ron Varley, Cheryl and Gord Fay of Oshawa, and predeceased by cherished daughter Debra Leixner (nee Varley). Father-in-law to Kurt Leixner. Dearest son of the late George and Eleanor Varley (nee Schlarp). Much loved grandfather of Amanda and Michael Fay of Oshawa, Alex Leixner, and Brittani Varley. Dear brother to Alfred and Arthur Varley. Loving nephew of Violet Boissonault. Brother-in-law to Blanche and Greg Masters, George Montpetit, John Montpetit, Mary Jane Marion, Gerard Montpetit, predeceased by Kathy Monpetit, Paul Montpetit, Annette and Mike Graham.Survived by many nieces, nephews, friends, and special friend; Rick Stata of Port Hope, and Bill Ziriada and George Wolstencroft of Windsor. After finishing high school (Walkerville Collegiate), Ron served 3 years in the U.S. Army.Shortly after his discharge he became a meat cutter at Dominion Stores where he worked for 20 years. While employed there he became the President of the Local Union (14045 U.S.W.A.) and remained so for 19 years and Vice-President of the Windsor and District Labour Council for 4 years. Ron also became very active in the New Democratic Party where he managed many election campaigns in Windsor and across Canada including Campaign Manager for Dave Cooke and Howard McCurdy. Ron became a Representative of the United Steelworkers of America where he served for 20 years in Toronto and Oshawa until his retirement in 2003. Even after retiring, Ron was called on to teach active unionists the art of negotiating collective agreements. Ron's passion (besides reading and his granddaughter"s baseball) was helping those who needed help the most and he will be sadly missed by all of us. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Brouillette Manor, the nurses, support staff, and Dr."s Sheehan & Zaki for their care and compassion during Ron"s stay. Visitation will be held at WINDSOR CHAPEL (Central Chapel), 1700 Tecumseh Rd E 519.253.7234 on Monday, May 29, 2017 from 2-5 & 7-9pm. Words of Remembrance will take place on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 11 am in the Chapel. Burial will follow at Heavenly Rest Cemetery.In kindness, memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or Windsor Essex Cancer Centre Foundation in memory of Ron.
