Obituary of Gladys Irene Mitchell
MITCHELL, Gladys Irene Born August 21, 1912 passed away peacefully in her 104th year. Thanks to the wonderful care of Lynda and the Home Instead team Gladys got her wish to remain in her own home until the end. Gladys was the daughter of William and Annie Mitchell and the beloved eldest sister to her three siblings Dorothy Gwen and Alfred all of whom predeceased Gladys. She will be fondly remembered for her quiet strength and sly wit by her niece Megan, her nephew Murray and all who had the privilege of knowing her. A passion for knowledge and a love of reading led Gladys to a profession as a Librarian. She was well loved and respected by her colleagues and prior to her retirement she was in charge of the family reading center and circulation desk at the Windsor Main Library. In her youth Gladys joined the Girl Guides. She was an avid camper and led many sing songs around the campfire! She became a Ranger Leader from 1930-1942. She achieved the rank of District Commissioner in Windsor and in her later years was an active member of the Windsor Trefoil Guild. Of equal importance to Gladys was her religion. She shared this spiritual journey with her devoted and loyal friend Camille who for the past 11 years has travelled twice weekly from Detroit to hold services at home for Gladys. As per Gladys's wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at WINDSOR CHAPEL FUNERAL HOME (Main Chapel) 519-253-7234, 1700 Tecumseh Rd East on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers donations to the Girl Guides of Canada to support Camp Bryerswood, so that future generations can continue to share stories and sing around the campfire would be gratefully appreciated.
