Obituary of Salvatore aka Sam Tortola

Passed away peacefully with his family by his side on March 9, 2016. Beloved husband of Assunta (Maitino) for 64 years. Loving father to Clelia and Leonello Duronio, and Sam and Romina Tortola. Dearest Nonno to Antoinette (Lucio) Duronio, Laura (Juan `JJ`) Carcelen, Matthew (Sabrina) Duronio, Alexa, and Brooklyn. Cherished Bis-nonno to Max, Iole, Domenico, Malena, Gabriel, Marziano, Alessio, and Giuliano. Beloved brother to Maria (late Salvatore) D'Agostino, Domenica (late Franco) Tortola and brother-in-law to Filomena (late Vincenzo) Tortola. Survived by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Felice & Clelia Tortola, parent-in-laws Antonio & Angiolina Maitino, and sister-in-law Ersilia (Vincenzo) DeBenedictis. Sam was an employee of Hotel-Dieu Hospital for 36 years. He was an RMT and worked over 20 years for Windsor Jewish Community Health Club. He was also a dedicated board member of The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit and Board of Health. Although he always remembered and lived his heritage he was proud of his new home, Canada, and thankful every day for what it had allowed him to accomplish. He had an undying love of life and lived passionately for his family and friends. He is respected by many and missed by all. His generosity and kindness were a constant to many in his life. We will always remember him for his leadership, his integrity, his life lessons and the path he walked and the many lives he touched. The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Huron Lodge (Willow) for their care and compassion during dad`s stay. The family also would like to extend their gratitude to the physicians and nurses of Ouellette Campus 7East and 6East. Visitation will be held at WINDSOR CHAPEL FUNERAL HOME (Main Chapel) 1700 Tecumseh Rd E, 519.253.7234 on Friday, March 11 from 2-5 and 7-9pm. Parish Prayers at 4:30pm. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, March 11 at 8:45am from the Funeral Home to St. Angela Merici Church for Funeral Mass at 9:30am. Entombment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
