Memories of a Beloved Brother-in-law, Uncle and Great-Uncle While we are glad that Ken/Uncle Ken will suffer no more and are comforted to know that he is at home with the Lord, it is difficult to come to grips with the fact that he has left this earthly plane; we so much enjoyed our conversations with him, savoring memories, appreciating his wry wit, and benefitting from the sage advice he so gently offered. His stories about seizing opportunities, persevering through hard times and coming to appreciate what is most important in life have guided and inspired us over the years. The relationship he had with his brother Jim (husband of Muriel, father of David and Nancy and grandfather of Michael) was one we will never forget. While they lived many miles apart for years, Ken and Jim spent many hours on the telephone, sharing their personal challenges, exploring insights on theological matters and supporting each other as only brothers can. At the very end of Jims earthly journey, it was Ken whom Jim constantly asked for, and it was Ken (ably assisted by Aunt Irene) who drove across Canada in time to spend two profoundly meaningful days at Jims bedside. While there are so many things to appreciate about Uncle Ken, the qualities that stand out most for us are blessings which led to what he considered his greatest assets: the perseverance associated with a long, interesting and successful career, the wisdom involved in a decision to return to Windsor to be close to all of his children, the vision associated with founding a faith community that has gone on to flourish, and the devotion to a marriage that has been, in every sense of the term, a true partnership. While we will miss Uncle Ken greatly, we are grateful for the many wonderful memories that will continue to encourage and inspire us.
