Obituary of Sr. Dorothy Dean

DEAN Sr. Dorothy, SNJM (Sister Mary Ellen "Agnes) October 15, 1921 " November 23, 2013. Our champion of education and life has gone before us! Sister Dorothy passed into the arms of our Lord peacefully at Devonshire Senior Residence. Pre-deceased by her parents, Harry and Nellie Dean (nee Winters), her sister Helen (Queenie) McMahon (Clifford), brothers Harry Dean (Shirley) and Bill Dean (Phyllis). She will be extremely missed by her devoted sister, Nell Ogg (Ronald) and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Sr. Dorothy became a Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary in August 1941. She began her teaching career in Montreal, accomplishing the challenge of learning French. She was a dedicated and influential teacher in many Windsor Elementary Schools. Many times throughout her later life she met students who commented on how she taught them to reach for success in their lives. Later, she became Head of the Guidance and Counseling Department at St. Mary"s Academy and Assumption High School where she influenced many young lives. After retiring from teaching in 1984, she became Pastoral Assistant at St. John the Baptist Parish (Amherstburg). In January 1990, she joined the staff at Holy Family Retreat House (Oxley). In 1992, she moved to the Peter Street Residence (Windsor) and in 2006 to Devonshire Senior Residence with her community of Holy Names Sisters. Dorothy had an impact on her SNJM companions and the residents of Devonshire. The Sisters of the Holy Names are very grateful to all those who ministered to Sister Dorothy in her final years, especially "Awesome" Ann Hanson, Ashley Larocque, the nursing staff at Devonshire, her "soul-mate" niece, Christine Inverarity and the Basilian Fathers. She will be greatly missed by her friend Sr. Elizabeth. Visitation will take place at WINDSOR CHAPEL FUNERAL HOME (Main Chapel) 519-253-7234 1700 Tecumseh Rd.
