Dr. Irwin was our primary physician for 33 years and the entire Wells family is deeply and truly saddened at this loss of someone we treasured both as physician and friend. He was phenomenal in this day of impersonal and rushed medicine. He gave his patients, well, patience. We never felt hurried or neglected when we had concerns. He listened, he suggested and he also heard suggestions which he valued, considered and often acted upon if they were sound. He was warm and welcoming, never brusque, never dismissive. He was "old school" in the very best sense of the phrase. He saw us through so many illnesses, through four children and the sometimes difficult circumstances which surrounded their births and aftercare. When our 9 year old son suffered a ruptured AVM, he was with us every step of the way, weighed in, cared about, and followed up. So generous in spirit and manner, he never hesitated to consult, to refer, and to inquire as to how things were progressing, but never in a clinical manner: always professional, but always personally concerned about us. We knew he cared as a human being as well as a truly and unusually invested doctor. There are so few like him that this was a heartfelt, deeply felt loss. Dear Dr. Irwin, friend and exceptional physician, we will miss your kind and gentle ways more than you can know. With love, respect and appreciation for everything, the Wells family.
