Mpy thoughts and feelings are with you all during this sad time. Besides being a major pioneer in Neuropsychology and a founding father of INS, Byron was a good friend and colleague and I will miss him greatly. I not only am extremely grateful for all his help to my career, but for the many years of wonderful camaraderie and intellectual stimulation. But, perhaps, most of all, I cherish how this all led to the opportunity to have wonderful relationships with Carolyne and all of the outstanding Rourke family. Bless you all and you are always in my thoughts.

To Byron's Family, It is with such sadness that I received this news and quite honestly Byron was so larger than life that it is hard to imagine this world without him. I will remember him for his great love of family (emails about your accomplishments, pictures of grandchildren proudly shared); his passion for his work; his keen mind; sage advice and dedication to his students. He has always been an important figure in my life despite the distance and passage of time since graduate school and he holds a special place in my heart . Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss. With love, -Kathy

Dear Carolyne and family, It was with sadness that I heard yesterday of Byron's passing. He played such an important role in my life, as he did in so many other of his students. I learned a great deal under his tutelage. His legacy will live on in the field of Neuropsychology. In addition to his impressive and influential body of work, he has trained many others who will continue to contribute and build on the foundations he established. More important than his groundbreaking career is the legacy he is leaving in the form of his family. I know how much he cared for all of you and how important each of you were to him. His pride in all of his sons and their families was readily apparent. Due to a family committment I will be unable to make it to the service this weekend. However, please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Byron was a great man and he will be missed by me and many others. Wtih my sincere condolences, Lisa Smith Walker Byron's graduating class of 1998

I am saddened to hear of Byron's death. He was a great man who made seminal contributions to child neuropsychology and to the profession more generally. I had a chance to work with him directly with regard to journal editing with The Clinical Neuropsychologist, which he founded with Ken Adams. Byron had many convictions, strongly held and directly expressed, and for that I respected him greatly. He will be missed by us all. My sincere condolences to the family for your loss.

Dear Carolyne, Phil, Sean, Damon and Bernie, Heather, Kathy, Jacinthe and Nicole, Please accept my deepest sympathy on the loss of your husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather. I was a classmate of Byron's at St. Angela School, and graduated from Assumption College High School in 1956 as he did. We also attended the University of Windsor at the same time. Often we would meet at the DH with the other guys from the '56 Class. I haven't been there in 2 years as I suffered a series of strokes. Byron will be missed by everyone who knew him. It was quite a shock to learn of his passing as I received an e-mail from him on Tuesday! May Byron Rest in Peace! Michael G. Jacko

Dear Carolyne and family I had the privilege of being one of Byron's early graduate students, earning my Masters degree in 1969. My work in neuropsychology with Byron took me to Ottawa to study with Bob Knights who was working in neuropychology as well. There, I earned my Ph.D in no small measure aided by preparation at the University of Windsor. I will not forget the small group seminars in Byron's office, he with his good humour and ready smile. I have been proud to have had a connection with Byron and enjoyed watching him move from success to success in neuroopsychology. His death is a great loss and I share your sadness. My thoughts are with you all. Bob Flewelling

Dear Rourke family: I thought i'd share my story about how your husband/father was instrumental in helping my son (Frank Imeson) in the late 80's when he was in grade 4. My son is one of your husband/father's sucess stories. My son, Frank was struggling in school and failing in all subjects. Yet at home I saw a different child, as most mothers do. When the school told me that Frank would never make it in a 'normal' highschool I was devasted. The tipping point for my son happened when he brought home a science test with a mark of 6/18. I asked him why he didn't answer the first question...you know the answer: Name the four seasons?. My son started to cry and said he didn't know that what it said. I realized at this point that his inability to read was holding him back from areas that he could excel in. This is where your husband/dad came into the picture. Frank saw your husband/dad and it changed both our lives. In the end, he determined that Frank had a grade 8 math understanding and a grade 1 english understanding, and without help to build his language skills, he would struggle doing what he likes to do - math and science. When your husband/father explained that (in wirting to the school) their attitude toward my changed from "oh, not much we can do with this one" to "Oh, I didn't know he was such a bright little boy". Your husband/dad designed a plan and my son was happy to follow it because it made him feel "like he wasn't the dummy he felt everybody at school thought he was". Your husband/father's words continue to be in my son's (and mine too) head. Upon graduating highschool, Frank defied all odds and was accepted into Waterloo University in the Physics Co-op Program (despite the fact that his highschool english teacher told if he goes to university, he'll be wasting his money". At Waterloo, he completed 2 degrees in 5 years: Physics and Math. And today, Frank is working on a masters in electrical/computerized engineering. Without your husbands/father's support, interest, and dedication, my son would have fallen through the cracks - instead he is a confident, intelligent probelm solver that awes us all. I hope this story helps you understand the impact your husband/father had on the people of his community. Whenever the time is right, I tell my story and I give thanks and prase to Dr. Rourke With sympathy and kind thoughts, Judy Palesh (nee Imeson), Amherstburg, ON
