I had the pleasure of teaching with Reno for many years at Assumption. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word, respected by all who knew him. He was a kind, caring, fatihful man who had a great love for his family. He had a wonderful ablility to make people laugh. I wll never forget the fun times we had with the Assumption Golf league and trips to Maggie Valley North Carolina. I will miss his great smile and laugh. I wish that I nad a chance to let him know what a great guy he was, and how lucky I was to be his colleague and friend. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. gary fera

My deepest sympathy goes to all of you on the loss of such a wonderful man. In Grade 12 at Assumption High School, I had the privaledge of having Mr. Bertroia as my History teacher. If memory serves me right, it was home room. His teaching style was not to stand at the board and talk at you - but rather to sit on the edge of his desk, legs swinging and talk to you. He taught History much like he told stories. He always listened, rarely lost patience and was always the consumate kind gentleman. When it came time to learn about the French Revolution he told us how one of the largest demonstrations came when the French marched out of the government buildings and sat on the tennis courts. The next morning, as he walked into the room - the entire class stood and walked out onto the tennis courts and sat down. Most teachers would have lost it - but Mr. Bertoia joined us. He sat down with us and conducted class as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. That was almost 36 years ago. He was and will continue to be my all time favourite teacher. May the prayers of the many students whose lives he touched help you through these difficult days. I have no doubt that God has saved a place for him on his All-Star Team. God Bless all of you.

Mr. Bertoia was a great history teacher, a compassionate and out going individual who always took the time to say hello and ask how you and your family were doing? I will never forget this beautiful person who touched many lives and made a difference in the world of baseball and teaching. May God give his family strength and courage in the days ahead. I will keep you in my daily prayers. God bless, Teresa Campanaro

I wanted to send my condolences to you all. I also taught for 31 years and knew Reno although not real well. I wanted to share a day in my life when I was about 12 years old . Reno took the time as a Detroit Tiger to play catch with me one day, a day I will never forget. It is true he touched the lives of many people and was most fortunate to be one of them. I am sure that home plate was dusted for his arrival.I will always remember his kindness. Dave McWhinnie

To the Bertoia and Daly Families, Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of Mr. Bertoia. He was a beloved teacher at Assumption College School. Unfortunately, I did not have him as one of my teachers, but he was well-respected by many of my classmates and often acknowledged them by name in the school hallways. May your wonderful memories comfort you during this difficult time. You're all in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Ozelle Patolot-Case Assumption College School Class of '86

My condolences to the family for your loss. I was blessed to have had the chance to learn history from Mr. Bertoia at Assumption. He was an exceptional teacher and role model. He made strong connections with all his students and taught us much more than history. My prayers are with you at this difficult time.

John Chittaro - When I was 12 years old, Uncle Reno (he would have been in his late 40's) was visiting with my parents. It was a hot summer day and I was in the yard with my ball and glove. Uncle Reno played catch with me and he gave pointers about fielding and throwing. Our conservation switched to base running. I told Reno that my coach thought I could be a base stealer (small but quick) but I needed to learn a good sliding technique to avoid injury. Uncle Reno offered to give me some lessons!! My dad, Eddi, went to get Reno a pair of jogging pants. Reno put the pants on over his shorts. We set our gloves in the yard as bases and reno slid into one after another describing the proper placement of the hands, legs, and feet. He slid a dozen times, each time letting me give it a try. I improved with every slide and his enthusiasm followed! I was in awe that a pro would take the time to 'slide' with me. More importantly, it was his positive encouragement that pushed me to practice often. I remember retelling this story to uncle Reno years later. His comment was 'That was fun, but I can't remember if I ruined your dad's pants?' God bless Uncle Reno. Love you always. John.

To the Bertoia family, our deepest condolences. Our families have been friends for over 70 years. I remember "Gna-gna Rina", my mother (Norma Romano) and I (Bianca DeLuca) spending many an hour making ravioli. Julie and I were good friends growing up, along with Rino's cousin Nancy Cividin and Helen Fioret. I can remember playing baseball and tennis on Hickory road with Rino, Walter Nicodemo, my late brother (Walter Romano) and other neighbourhood friends. On March 7th of this year I lost my dear husband (Armando DeLuca). I share in your pain. I hope that faith, family and friends will give you strength at this difficult time. Our prayers and thoughts are with you. With love and blessings, Bianca DeLuca (nee Romano) and family (Carl, Marta and Joseph)

April 16, 2011 Although History had been a part of my life forever, it was Reno - Mr. Bertoia back then - who brought it to life. He had a true gift for teaching and all of us who sat in his classroom were so fortunate that he chose to share it with us. He was definitely one of those people that left a footprint in my life. I hope that you all gain comfort from the memories that you built and shared together as you mourn his loss from your life. Fondly, Alisa Metcalfe Class of '84

To Reno's Family, It is with deep sadness that we learned about Reno's passing. He was a tremendous friend to our family from the time he arrived in Canada as a young boy. I will remember him best as one of my favourite teachers at Assumption. He made History come alive and was always encouraging us to learn with passion. Although his exploits as an athlete are well documented, I feel his best legacy will be the influence he had on myself on many other young people in Windsor as a superb teacher. He will be greatly missed - especially by my father. John Nicodemo Seoul, South Korea

To the family of Mr. Reno Bertoia, I don't know what to say except that your father/husband was a much loved class act. I lost my older brother, Dan, last summer, and the one thing I remember is that whenever I ran into Mr. Bertoia, the first thing he asked was, "How is Dan doing?" Always. That was the kindest thing. I hope that you all can find some peace in knowing that this wonderful man is no longer suffering, and has left such huge footprints in the hearts of all who knew him. He reminded me of Clint Eastwood....a shining star no matter what profession he would have taken. God Bless you all during this time of sadness and great loss....and, obviously know, that he was loved by many, many, many people. Mrs. Chrissy VanderHeide-Stolarski (nee Stodolny--Class of '80) Assumption College High School

Reno lived a few houses away from our family on Langlois Avenue during his adolescence. He and my brother George used to throw the ball to each other for hours and just about every day. They were good buddies. As a teenager he was a gentleman and a scholar and I understand that was how he lived his life. I am very sorry to hear of his death and my condolences to his family. Rest in peace Reno. Lee Preney
