Obituary of Assunta Greco
GRECO, Assunta. Assunta Greco passed away peacefully the morning of January 6th, 2011 from complications of a stroke sustained December 24th. She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren throughout her illness. Reunited with her beloved late husband Giuseppe Greco. Survived by her children Giovanni Greco (Maria), Maria Mancina (Pietro), Antonietta Mascaro (Pete), Antonio Greco (Filomena), Sarah Amato (Tony), Anna Guarascio (Sam). Predeceased by her parents Giovanni and Antonietta (Peluso) Greco, sisters Serafina Mancina (Antonio) and Teresa Greco (Antonio). Assunta Greco was born in San Giovanni in Fiore, Calabria, Italy, February 14th, 1913. She was the embodiment of Valentines Day; bringing joy and laughter to every endeavor, she showered generosity and love on all whose lives she touched. Nonna Assunta, as she was known to her grandchildren, most valued her relationships with God, her family, and her church. Her faith in God made her resilient and carried her through her long, full life. Nonna remembered life before the distractions of modern technology. She had no desire to be recorded in any way as a document of her existence. Nonna knew the testament of her life was the legacy of her family. She lavished us with affection. She relished in all our accomplishments. She frequently sang us songs, recited poems, and told us stories about her life in Italy. Nonna Assunta taught us by example what it means to be a family. She was the matriarch of our family for nearly 98 years. The depth of our sadness cannot be measured, but then neither can the joy her smile brought us. Nonna is the kindest, strongest, bravest woman we know or will ever know. In addition to her children, she is survived by her grandchildren Joseph (Carmela), Susan (Brian), Gino (Rose), Patrizia (Mustafa), Angela, Susan (Bill), Sammy (Karen), Adriana (Billy), Rafaelle, Delia, Daniel, Maria, Joseph, Marco, Maria, Anthony. Her great grandchildren, Alessandra, Marco, Ibrahim, Pete, Mateo and Anthony. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of the 8th floor at Hotel Dieu Hospital for their attention to Nonna's needs and their kindness to our family.
