To Professor Azads family and Friends I was shocked and saddened by the news of the passing of Prof. (Dr.) Ram S. Azad. In 1992, I was the 26th person to graduate with a Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba under his supervision. Yet he made me feel like his very first student, and worked hands-on with me on all aspects of my research. I was perhaps the only Ph.D. student in the university who could boast of having coffee breaks at the students center with my advisor at 10 A.M. everyday and we never discussed work during this period. I learned by watching him that in order to thrive in a complex field like turbulence, one has to work hard, stay focused, and remain very calm. For example, I was in his office searching unsuccessfully for a book from his vast collection and he said that people borrow his books and fail to return them. I suggested that he could have them sign for the books. He casually said, No, that will become a job in itself. Keep working on those equations and I will search for the book when I get home. I just wish to convey my heart-felt condolences to his widow, Mrs. Mildred Azad, to his son, Jason, and to his daughter, Indra. It is important for you to know that many people, including myself, are better humans for having known Dr. Azad. May he rest in peace and I pray that God should give you courage during these difficult times. Dr. Akamabe Tanjo Ottawa, July 22, 2007
