Obituary of Rebecca Battersby Bolton
With broken hearts the family of Rebecca Battersby Bolton (nee Hurst) announce her passing on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at the age of 71. Beloved wife of Robert Bolton whom she spent 44 years with. They were soulmates. Loving mother of Brandon Battersby (Amy) and Jamie Battersby (Lina). Cherished grandmother of Blake and Lyla Battersby. Dear sister of Dr. Randall Hurst (Sharon), Michael Hurst (Debbie), Lisa Archer (Dr. Keith Archer), Rod Hurst (Lisa), Cathy Rankine (Gary), and Dr. Jody Hurst (Dr. Sheldon Lewis). Rebecca will also be deeply missed by many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents Noah and Evelyn Hurst.
Becky grew up in Remington Park and was the third child of seven. She considered herself a 'tomboy' and enjoyed fishing for pollywogs and frogs at the Grand Marais drain. Becky loved animals, especially cats, and was as one would say, 'a cat lady'. She really loved family, especially extended family gatherings where food, conversation, and the occasional water balloon landed. Becky was a sports fan, initially with her two dear boys, Brandon and Jamie, watching them play baseball for Windsor Central and more recently watching her pride and joy her grandchildren, Blake and Lyla, playing soccer and hockey. At Blake's hockey games she became known as 'the arena grandma,' because her pockets were full of fruit roll-ups for all of the kids. She was a Toronto Blue Jays and Maple Leafs fan! And Becky was a bowler for several years, winning the 'most improved' bowler twice! Becky liked the simple life. A week at a cottage up north, the water hitting the rocks was music to her ears. The campfire and black night sky lit by a myriad of stars, found her looking for the constellations with excitement.
Becky was always excited to go antiquing, looking for that eclectic item to adorn her corner cabinets. She loved the road trips to attend flea markets and craft shows. The highlight of travel was a recent road trip to the east coast, culminating in Prince Edward Island, where her mother was born, 'back to her roots' she said. Becky was a selfless person who put others' needs above her own. She supported Street Help and always the Salvation Army. Becky remained a housewife but was also a caregiver to many of her nieces and nephews, for which many untold stories remain. Who can ever forget Becky dressed up as Sesame Street's Bert with her pants falling down at one of the children's birthday parties? Becky loved music and everyone knew she was an avid Beatles fan! A particular highlight was seeing Sir Paul McCartney at Comerica Park in 2011. She commented "the best birthday gift ever!"
Becky was a quiet intellect, a Jeopardy super fan and often a living room Jeopardy champ! Her vocabulary was vast and word games and solving puzzles were her thing. Becky was a lot to so many in differing ways. She left us too soon and we will miss her dearly.
The family would like to thank the staff at both Ouellette and Metropolitan campuses of Windsor Regional Hospital. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army or Street Help.
