A Tribute to My Mom, the Warrior

My mom is, and always will be, a warrior. In 2005, she faced cancer head on and beat it with a strength that inspired everyone around her. When it returned, she faced it once again with the same courage. This time, however, she chose a path that reflects her strength in a different way. She refused to let herself suffer. Instead, she took control and beat cancer on her own terms, choosing medical assistance in dying, because that’s who she is, someone who faces life, and death, with courage.

Although I am her only child, her true joy was being a grandmother to my children, Anthony and Raven. While she is now Raven’s guardian angel, we take comfort in knowing that she is reunited with her favourite grandson, Anthony, who was taken from us too soon. Together, they will dance, laugh, and maybe he will even turn her into a Heavenly golfer.

We’ve had the privilege of sharing so much with her, even in these final moments. We laughed, we talked, and we cherished every moment we were given. Though she is now on the other side, this isn’t goodbye. We know we will see her again.

Mom, you’ve taught us what it means to live with bravery, to love with all your heart, and to leave this world with dignity and peace. We love you always, and your strength, love, and spirit will remain with us forever.

We love you always and see you later alligator...

Stephanie
