Obituary of Edyta Bas (Nee Weselak)

It is with great sadness that the family of Edyta Bas announce her passing on Tuesday May 7th after a brief battle with cancer at the age of 87 in Kingsville, ON.

She was surrounded by her loving family, and now re-joins her beloved husband, the late Wiktor Bas (d. 2013) in everlasting life.

Born in pre-war Ternopol, Poland (now Ukraine), to Antoni and Henryka Weselak, Edyta is predeceased by her sister Zofia Paszkowska (England) and Kazia Karczmarczyk and is survived by her brother Edmund.

At the beginning of WWII, Edyta and her family were uprooted and sent to Siberia in the former Soviet Union where they remained for the next two years. She and her family were then relocated to Tanzania in east Africa where they remained as refugees for seven years. After the war, they were resettled to England, where they remained until she and her family members emigrated to Canada.

In Canada, she met the love of her life, Wiktor Bas. They were married in 1959 and settled in Windsor, where they together raised a family and built a successful structural steel company, Victoria Steel over their lifetimes.

Edyta will be lovingly remembered by her children Ron (Jo-Anne Mailloux) of LaSalle, Andy (Rose Pomerleau) of Kingsville, and Vicki (James Brennan) of Ottawa. She is also indelibly etched in the hearts of her grandchildren, Kyla, Emily (Aaron Andary), Curtis (Kaitlyn Collins), Jeffrey (Chelsea Mullins), Ryan (Jill Nicodemo), Jordan (Leandra Armstrong) and Nathalie; her Great-Grandchildren – Victor, Amber, Scarlett, Benjamin, Andrew, Lawrance and Evaliah and numerous well cherished family members and friends.

Known as “Babcia to all, Edyta was the quintessential Polish grandmother and great-grandmother, with a selfless love for all. She loved to spend time outdoors at home especially tending to her garden, leaves, bushes, roses and lawn.

Edyta was a woman of great faith and was an active member of the Polish parish and community for more than 60 years.

Thank you to all her wonderful neighbours that kept an eye on her throughout the years. Special thank you to the wonderful staffs at Chartwell Residence in LaSalle and AgeCare Royal Oak in Kingsville who provided her with exceptional compassionate care.

Friends and family may pay their respects at Windsor Chapel Funeral Home – Banwell Chapel (11677 Tecumseh Road E.) on Monday, May 13th, 2024 from 4-8pm. With prayers to be held at 7pm.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church (Windsor) on Tuesday, May 14th, 2024 at 11am. Internment at Heavenly Rest Catholic Cemetery to follow.
