One of my grandmother’s favourite pastimes was enjoying a hot cup of tea with friends and family around a kitchen table. It was here memories could be made and stories shared.
The kitchen was also where many of acts of love would be realized, whether Nanny was making a hot supper to nourish her loved ones, preparing dozens of tourtiere meat pies to save and share with others, or baking dozens of Christmas cookies to celebrate the holidays with family.
It’s these small acts that I will cherish most about her. I never lived very close to my grandmother, so I didn’t get to see her as often as I wished. When we did get together, it wasn’t under grand circumstances, but it usually involved family, food and her unconditional love.
Nanny passed away peacefully Thursday, Nov. 9 at the age of 85. Today would have been her 86th birthday.
I’ve struggled with how to put together words that would do my Nanny’s life justice. As a professional writer, this is hard for me to come to terms with, but I also know in my profession that one person’s account of another’s experience, or in this case, my Nanny’s life, does not define their entire story. It is the collection of memories and stories from the numerous people who have been lucky enough to have experienced life with her.
And oh, how so many people have been a part of Nanny’s life! Between her late husband Maynard, her parents, 11 siblings, five children, 16 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and countless cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends and more, there are hundreds of stories of Nanny — of Jacqueline Marie Chedore — that will live on even though she is no longer with us.
I will never know the depth and breadth of all of these stories or how she impacted so many people. But I can find comfort in knowing they all exist, and that she loved — and was loved by — so many people.
The days may seem long at times, but the years fly by, so fill your life with experiences you’ll cherish into your old age, and family and friends who bring you joy.
Make memories and stories for you and others to share.
