I worked with John for a year at Brennan in 94. He was a welcoming and generous colleague who enriched my time in Windsor both at work and after hours. Many fond memories. A BIG man with an even BIGGER heart. RIP mate.

John was 3 years older in high school...he was our mentor ...later in life he simply became john...I liked him off the pedestal of great athlete. He was kind sensitive moody stubborn and all the other characteristics that make you human...our life is a time line and people just dots on that line.. I'm glad that John was a very special dot on my life's journey... rest in piece ... pardon the pun but leaving us to soon is a cardinal sin.

In the week since hearing of Mr. Schmidt's passing, I've remembered many fond things about him as a teacher, coach, and an amazing person:
-In Gr.9 gym class whenever anyone scored a goal, he signaled it with the two-handed Aussie rules football goal gesture that was both funny and awesome.
-His physical abilities leaving us in awe: chin-ups with his body straight as an arrow, talking to the class effortlessly as he lead us through sets of push-ups that were making our arms fall off, gravity defying body lean when demonstrating running A's and B's for the track team, etc.
-Cold Saturday morning practices early in the spring, where he brought donuts for everyone.
-For such an imposing figure, the only times I ever saw him angry was in defense of others who needed someone to stand up for them, or when he knew someone was making a mistake that would cause them to not reach their potential.
-How he sincerely celebrated everyone's successes.
-The feeling of easy camaraderie anytime you ran into him, anywhere.
Thank you for all you did for us, Mr. Schmidt. Caritas.

Dear Schmit family, we are incredibly sorry to hear about Mr. Schmidt’s passing. We got to know him a few years ago as our son attended Brennan. Mr Schmidt was his gym teacher in Grade 9 and motivated the boys with donuts for the most improved at whatever event was on that week. At the end of the year he gave the speech at the Evening of Excellence awards providing money to the male and female track stars. Telling the story of your Mom who was tiny and died of pancreatic cancer and in her memory of all her giant children, provide the ability to purchase good cletes to carry on their athletic careers. My son gave him framed records when he told the kids he was retiring. Mr Schmidt was thrilled and said it was a thoughtful gift he would remember forever. May all his good deeds and sense of humor live on in your hearts forever. Julie, Chris and Jared Durocher

John was a Friend with a capital F - the "brother from another mother". He truly did light up a room when he entered, and he had an absolutely infectious smile. I was shocked and devastated when I heard of his passing and the world is a lesser place without him in it. There are so many stories that still get told to this day that have John at the centre of them. When people hear those stories for the first time, they assume, or state outright "you're exaggerating!", but the truth is John was that big. Those stories will continue to be told, to entertain people who never met John, and bring a warm smile to my face for years to come.
To John's family, I am so sorry I won't be able to make it to the funeral to give you a hug but know that he was loved dearly and will be missed.
I love you my brother. Until we meet again.

I am so very sorry to hear that John has left us. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in John’s family and his massive group of friends. “Schmonster” is larger than life. He selfishly touched so many lives and was always a bright light that shone on anyone that had the good fortune of knowing him. He is a great friend, brother, uncle, teammate, coach, mentor and teacher. Whilst he was a great self-taught guitar player, he was also a world class air guitar player who taught many of us how to enjoy the moment. I like to think that Schmonster is playing “Highway Star” right now and smiling down on all of us.

I had the good fortune of growing up near 2686 Byng Rd., the original 'Schmidt Haus', and then going to high school with Rob. John was the 'older' brother but hung around with us as if we were his friends. We laughed, sang, listened to a lot of 'Rush', and watched him plow through the family hedges, which he designated as the Green Bay Packers defensive line, carrying a football. We spent many Friday nights at Windsor Stadium watching John's exploits on the field and hearing, "John Schmidt the ball carrier" over and over the tinny loudspeakers of the stadium. John was a mentor to Rob and I who took up hurdles as our track event, just like John. Even as a student and young man, John was a natural teacher, and coach. He always accentuated the positive and coached us to strive for our best. His brother Bill, continued that coaching legacy while John was away at school.
One of my favourite headlines was written in the spring of 1978 by Ken Fathers of the Windsor Star which exclaimed, "Sixth Schmidt Shows Stuff" after Rob won the 100m Hurdles event at the Kennedy Relays. Just the headline alone, inferred that Rob was one of six incredible athletes that were raised in the Schmidt Haus, a tribute to Ted and Madeleine. Not only athletes, but authors, academics, artists and accomplished individuals...and John was all of that.
I was fortunate to reconnect with John when I went to Western. He was now a nationally ranked in the shot put and coached me still in the hurdles. We spent a few nights in pubs around London, singing along to Led Zeppelin and Rush cover bands, until our voices gave out. He laughed loud and loved to throw those arms around you and crush you in a bear hug. John had a zest for life.
Time has passed..and he too is now gone. However, that huge spirit of John will be with us all forever...the smile, the laugh, the hugs. If you walk past Windsor Stadium at night time, with the field floodlit..listen carefully, you can still hear the call, "John Schmidt the ball carrier". If you walk the halls of F.J. Brennan High School or the athletic buildings of Western University, even if you don't hear his hearty laugh, you will feel his presence, because John may have been the biggest 'Schmidt Haus' of all.
Rest in peace my friend.

Ken and I had the privilege of knowing John as a student and later as a friend and colleague. Ken coached him and then coached with him at Brennan and John and I were both on the teaching staff. What I remember most about John was the essential kindness with which he approached everyone. Several people have commented on his ability to light up a room. Yes, he did that, but he never forgot the people standing in the shadows. John was a wonderful teacher of special education students, endlessly patient and optimistic. “Schmittie” never had a bad word to say about anyone and that feeling was reciprocated. He leaves us with smiles and happy memories.

My condolences go out to the entire Schmidt family. John was an immensely likeable person. I first remember John from grade 8. He and I played each other in the grade school one-on-one city tournament - 1972? Moving on to Brennan the next year, we were teammates on football and basketball teams. I will never forget his, "War Cry." He would have the entire dressing room laughing. His zest for life, exuberance, integrity, and passion for sport were infectious. In later years we would run into each other occasionally and share great memories. Until we meet again, rest in peace my friend.

Sending my condolences to all his family and friends the world has lost a great man. I had the absolute pleasure of having him as a teacher, I remember he used to make jokes that maybe one day when we were older we would run into each other and have some "pops" together I used to laugh at the notion but wouldn't you know it we did run into each other a couple months ago and had some "pops" together
