Obituary of Luigia "Louise" Danelon

Our cherished cook has left the kitchen! It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mom, Luigia, (Gigia) on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at the age of 93. She was born on October 23, 1929 in Bagnarola, Italy to the late Giovanni and Antonia Piagno. Reunited with her husband, Pietro, (2019) with whom she celebrated 70 years of marriage. Beloved mother of Dennis (Emily) and Lori Smith (Rick Armstrong). Nonna Gigia was so proud of her loving grandchildren who always kept in touch with her: Michael, Mark (Tania), David (Monique) Danelon and Jen Hart (Jon). As a Bisnonna, she lovingly adored her pride and joy and will be forever in the hearts of Paolo and Sabrina Danelon, Alexis Hart and Noemi and Eric Danelon. She always fed them well with her risotto, pasta, cookies and grissini. Dear sister of the late Primo and Elena Piagno, and late Virginio and Giacomina Piagno (Italy) and late Augusto and Regina Piagno (Windsor). She will be missed by nephew, Roy (Wava) Piagno and niece, Yvette (late Augustin) Zemora of Windsor and also niece, Susi (Angelo) Tussut of Italy. As many immigrants of her era, she worked very hard and with very little to make Canada her new home. She worked at Hotel Dieu Hospital for a while and then became a stay-at-home mom, cook, housekeeper, seamstress etc. for the remainder of her life, taking care of her husband who thoroughly loved her cooking, her live-in mother-in-law, her two children and later even babysitting her grandchildren. Our deepest gratitude to the late Dr. DeMarco Sr. and his son, Dr. F.S. DeMarco for their many years of dedicated care. Special thanks to the wonderful paramedics who gently attended to her and lovingly “carried” her to the ambulance. The family would also like to extend their most sincerest appreciation to Luigia’s recent caregivers at WRH Met Campus, 4th floor nurses and attending physicians for all their assistance and professional care. Also our overwhelming gratitude to the HDGH Dr. Y. Emara Centre Palliative care for their wonderful attention and patience especially Tracy. There were many, very kind and caring people whom we are unable to mention but in your hearts you know who you are and may God bless you. Thank you also to Fr. Steven Huber from St. Angela Merici for providing Luigia her Last Rites and final Eucharist. Gigia was totally self-sufficient and fiercely independent until the day she entered the hospital. Her family was blessed because of this, but also because she had a wonderfully, caring and attentive neighbour, Michelina Liburdi, who doted on her all the time. Honouring Luigia’s request, there will be a private family viewing. Friends and family are asked to gather at St. Angela Merici Church (980 Louis Ave.) on Thursday, September 21 for visitation from 8:30 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Private entombment to follow. In kindness and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Transition 2 Betterness or a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.windsorchapel.com

Ciao “Dear mame.” Say hello to your former card partners in Heaven as you join Pete, Noemi and Gino in a rousing game of briscole.

Luigia’s final message to everyone: “I do not want any weeping for me; only for everyone to love and get along with each other, and to enjoy their lives fully on this earth. Mangjè e bev!”
