Obituary of Nicola Qawwas
November 07 1943 - May 06 2026
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved family patriarch, Nicola Qawwas, lovingly known as Nick, who died peacefully at home surrounded by family at the age of 82.
Born in Jifna, Palestine, on November 7, 1943, Nick carried the rich heritage of his birthplace with him when he immigrated to Canada at the age of 23. Over the next six decades, he wove those roots into the fabric of a new life, becoming a man who was as proud of his journey as he was of his destination. He was a patriot who cherished his adopted home, and nothing expressed his Canadian pride more powerfully than his voice singing the national anthem-a spirited tribute to the life he cultivated here.
Beloved husband of Rima, with whom he shared 55 years of marriage. Proud and loving father of Zahia, Badi, Natalie (Jeff) and George (Danielle). Cherished grandfather to Michael, Owen, Olivia, Ayla, Sophie and Anthony. Dear brother to Marie Zawany (late Gubrael) and predeceased by his brother Suhail and sisters Jameelah and Suhaila. Loving uncle of Angelique, George (Karen) and Alexander (Andrea) and families.
As one of the original founders of St. Ignatius of Antioch Orthodox Church, Nick was a true pillar of the community. For over 35 years, he shared his gift as a chanter, using his powerful voice to fill the church and bring warmth to the hearts of the congregation.
His legacy is defined by his two great loves: his faith and his family. He possessed a profound capacity for love, proving it daily through the countless ways he cared for others and the gentle kindness he extended to everyone who knew him.
Special thanks to all the doctors, nurses, and PSWs who cared for Nick both in the hospital and at home. Your compassion, dedication, and support meant so much to our family.
