Dave & Sue; Katie, Patty, and Jackie - My heart aches for all of you. I was so sad to hear of James’ passing. Please know that Jenna, Emily & I have been praying for the Lord’s peace to comfort all of you in your pain. What I remember about James was his great sense of humour, just like his dad and the rest of the Paterson men! I also remember how much he loved Dottie’s lovely wee doggie, Annie! We love you guys and are thinking of you.

This photo was taken on a quiet evening out on White Lake, sitting on the pontoon boat at the cottage after one of those perfect days you wish could last forever. That’s how I’ll always remember James, calm, genuine, and surrounded by the kind of simple happiness he brought to everyone around him.
James wasn’t just my best friend, he was the kind of person who showed up for you without being asked, who listened without judging, and who made everything feel a little lighter just by being there. I’ve never met someone with a heart as kind as his. He had a way of making people feel valued, understood, and supported, no matter what.
To Dr. Paterson, Sue, Katie, Patty, and Jaclyn, my heart is with you. I’m deeply sorry for your loss. James meant so much to me, and I can only imagine how much more he meant to all of you. He was truly one of a kind.
I’ll carry his memory with me always, every laugh, every conversation, every moment like this one on the lake. I miss him more than words can say, and I always will.
Some people leave a mark that never fades. James was one of those people.

Dear Dr. Dave, Sue, Katie, Patty, and Jackie,
My heart breaks for you and all of us touched by James’ life. Like many of the tributes so far, James’ ability to connect people and go above and beyond to help others has affected my life in the most profound ways.
While working together in Ottawa, he invited me to the most special of places to celebrate his birthday: “the yurt.” His friends from Windsor were going to be there and maybe I would like to meet his friend Craig. I actually didn’t know James that well, didn’t have much interest in meeting his friends, and probably had to Google what a yurt was, but I decided to attend.
In the coming years James continued to help make things happen for me: a place to live when I relocated to Tecumseh (“Dottie P’s house of wallpaper” - a testament to the entire Paterson family’s hospitality and accommodation), a connection to a vet when our dog needed surgery, and most recently a good word with a seller when Craig and I were struggling to find a home to fit our growing family. He helped move us in …though he was the only one who showed up in a shirt with sleeves - big mistake.
While our contact with James ebbed and flowed over the years, I’ll hold tight to memories of boat rides (a special one on July 4, the whole Michigan shoreline lit up with fireworks, all for Jimmy P.’s birthday), front porch hangs, pool silliness, late night games, and his arm thrown around my shoulder, always calling me “Horner.”
James - we love you, we always did, and we always will. I hope you knew.

One day, I was invited to have a beer with James at this cool new spot that just was making ripples called Barrel House… he mentions his bar he bartends at has a Monday burger special and classic car show.
I needed money. I had an apartment and a car, and I wanted to go back to school. I had never served alcohol before. James didn’t care. Hired me anyways.
James and I had the same kind of humor - direct - but his was so dry sometimes you almost missed it. He had an uncanny delivery.
He tried to call me SarBear - to which I immediately protested.
“I don’t want to be something so soft.”
“Dinosaurs then. Saradactyl, then. Or tri-Sarah-top.” he coined me.
I have plenty of memories both inside and out of work with James.
James often had the best playlist at Brews (sorry Vegh) so we chatted about music often. The first thing I did when I worked on Arkells music video was think, I cannot wait to grab a beer and tell James this. He’s who introduced me to them years ago!
Without that job, without that chance, I’m not sure I would have been able to afford to make my dreams come true.
James, I’m crying as I write this, because it’s been too many years since we had a pint and I cannot believe now I can’t ever have another with you.
I remember when you told me your SUV was your favorite color of green. I hope you’re walking the dogs on a path full of that forest green.

James has been a special person in my life for 15 years! It started out as the boys Sunday breaky at Shotz… (I was the server). It wasn’t long before we became good friends. So weird… I was moving to Ottawa… which James clearly had experience. He arranged my job here in Ottawa! We met up many times both in Windsor as well when he was visiting the family cottage.
My heart is hurting for all of the family and friends. My sincere condolences to all. To say he will be missed by so many is an understatement. Rest in peace my friend.

I’m going to miss that compassionate and beautiful soul that I’ve been privileged to know the majority of my life. Always the funny, witty, adventurous and joyous kid that always got a smile Out of you, especially if he could sense you needed one. James was always the coolest kid who would tag along with his older peers, but we loved having him with us because he always seemed to glow with enthusiasm and had a calming aura that people wanted to be around.
He stepped up and was kind enough to look after my dog when I was unable to for a time as he was always willing to help anyone in need. I am grateful to have known him and consider myself blessed and fortunate to have spent so much time with him over the years up north belly laughing and always having a blast when Jamers was around.
My heart goes out to all who love him so deeply.
