Obituary of Giuseppe Fontana

Born on June 7, 1930, in Gibellina, Sicily, and passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026, in Windsor, Ontario. Reunited with his beloved parents, Paolo and Rosalia Fontana. Devoted husband to Giuseppa, with whom he shared 64 wonderful years of marriage. Loving father of Paolo and Sherry Fontana, and Vito and Bessie Fontana. Cherished Nonno to Melissa and Justin Hoffman, Josie and Jake Coulson, and Alessandro Fontana. Proud Bisnonno to Luca, Isabelle, Jonas, Paisley, and Tessa. Dear brother to Giovanni and Lina Fontana; Ignazio and Tanina Fontana; and Francesco and Antonina Fontana. Loving brother-in-law to Giacomo and Vincenza Bonanno, and Francesca and Salvatore Bonanno. Giuseppe arrived in Canada on April 23, 1969, after the devastating earthquake of 1968 destroyed his hometown of Gibellina. Exactly 25 years later, his first grandchild was born on April 23, 1994. He worked at Windsor Bumper for 20 years, until its closure in 1990. Following his time there, he invested in several properties before retiring in 2005 at the age of 75. A long-time member of St. Angela Merici Church, Giuseppe was also proud to belong to the Congregazione di San Giuseppe. He enjoyed tending to his garden, making wine and tomato sauce, and preserving many cherished traditions from Italy. Ever social, he could often be found playing scopa and briscola at local cafés. Above all, Giuseppe placed his family at the centre of his life. He was a devoted husband who loved helping his wife in the kitchen, and he took great joy in spending time with his grandchildren and great‑grandchildren. With a gentle spirit and a quiet sense of humour, he loved to tease and make them laugh. His happiest moments were spent relaxing on his couch, softly singing old Sicilian songs-a peaceful presence to all who knew him. Giuseppe will be remembered for his kindness, his strength, and his unwavering love for his family. Family and friends will be received at Windsor Chapel Funeral Home – Central Chapel (1700 Tecumseh Rd. E. 519-253-7234) on Monday, March 2, 2026 from 2-5pm and 7-9pm, with parish prayers at 4:30pm. A Funeral Service will take place on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 at 10:30am from the funeral home then to St. Angela Merici Church for Funeral Mass at 11:00am. Donations in Giuseppe’s memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, or Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital – Regional Children's Centre.
