Obituary of Mary Fortais

FORTAIS, Mary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Mary Fortais, at the age of 91. May the Lord rest her eternal soul. Amen.

Mary was born in Walkerville Ontario, and remained in Windsor for her entire life. She was employed at Brown’s Silk Shop on Ouellette Avenue, worked for a number of years at Green Giant Canada in Tecumseh, and retired from her working career at Versa Food Services in the cafeteria at the GM trim plant. Both her and my father John (God rest his soul) were founding members of St. George’s Romanian Orthodox Cathedral, and were very firm in their faith.

She is survived by her beloved son Matthew, daughter Rebecca (Kevin), grandson Jason, great grandson Cody and daughter-in-law, Katherine. Also survived by sister-in-law Virginia and numerous cherished nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her father Samuel Sitari (born in Bukovina Romania), mother Dora Hahn (Saskatchewan), loving husband John and beloved son Mark. Mary enjoyed spending time in her flower room, cultivating numerous varieties with a favourite in orchids. She loved to crochet; her most recent endeavor was making blankets for adopted shelter pets.

She was an avid cook and baker, especially of traditional Romanian Easter breads, which she shared generously with family every Easter.

Her sweetness, good humour and council will be sadly missed.

May the Lord through his mercy grant her life everlasting. Amen.

A visitation will be held at WINDSOR CHAPEL (Central Chapel) 1700 Tecumseh Rd. E. (519-253-7234) on Monday, February 23, 2026 from 2:00 - 5:00pm and 7:00 - 9:00pm. Prayers at 7:30pm. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, February 24, 2026 at 11:00am at St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Interment to follow at Windsor Memorial Gardens (1100 Division Rd). In memory of Mary, donations may be made to The Kidney Foundation of Canada, or Heart and Stroke Foundation, or War Amps.
