Hi Ray,
As Weili’s supervisor and friend during the last years of her work, I would like to say a few more words. It is with deep sorrow that I mourn the passing of my colleague and dear friend, Xu Weili. Her sudden departure, at a younger age than mine, has left me shocked and profoundly saddened. I regret missing the chance to bid her farewell due to a change of communication devices.
Weili’s excellent educational background from Nankai University and Brock University in Canada has enabled her to devote decades of service to soybean quality and soil quality research, contributing invaluable analyses and co-authoring scientific papers. Warm-hearted and generous, she cared for my fellow Chinese visiting students and scholars and offered support that made them feel at home.
Beyond science, Weili was passionate about literature. She wrote one of the earliest anti-corruption novels in China, published poetry, and authored a travelogue about Taiwan, all reflecting her sensitivity and love of life.
During the pandemic, she persevered in the fields and laboratories, ensuring research continuity. After retiring, she moved to a new home with her husband, looking forward to a peaceful life. Sadly, fate took her away too soon.
May Weili rest in peace in heaven, tending the garden she loved. Her kindness, talent, and dedication will remain forever in our hearts.
