Obituary of Maurice Matassa
Maurice Matassa
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Maurice Matassa, who passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on October 27, 2025, after courageously facing an extremely long illness.
Maurice was born on December 24, 1939, in Casalattico, Italy, to the late Rosa and Atillo Matassa. He was a devoted and loving husband to Anne Matassa for 47 years and a cherished brother to Liz, Julio, and Anna. He is predeceased by siblings Bruno, Nello, Louis, and Mary.
Maurice is also survived by his brother-in-law Leslie (Lynne) Morvay, as well as many nieces and nephews who will remember him with love and gratitude.
A proud graduate of the University of Windsor, Maurice earned his Bachelor of Education and went on to teach at Vincent Massey Secondary School and Walkerville Collegiate Institute, Secondary School. Dedicated to his students and his profession, Maurice inspired countless young minds throughout his teaching career.
Beyond the classroom, Maurice shared his many passions with others, He taught and organized chess matches, encouraging students to think critically and enjoy the strategy of the game.
Maurice discovered his passion for curling alongside his wife, Anne, and together they spent many happy years at Roseland Curling Club. Over more than 30 years, they competed in numerous local events and built cherished friendships within the curling community.
A man of many interests, Maurice had a strong passion for photography and astronomy, often found behind his camera capturing life’s moments or gazing at the stars through his telescope with wonder and curiosity. His love for learning and exploring the world never faded.
Maurice will be remembered for his intelligence, humor, compassion, and the quiet strength with which he faced life’s challenges. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, curiosity, love and dedication to those he cared for most.
