A beautiful obituary, Anne. It captures Maurice as he was – so smart, and interested in everything. He was devoted to you, as you were to him. I remember when Paul and I would invade your home, Maurice was always happy to have us, happy to talk with Paul about their shared interests, happy to talk with me about hockey, but especially happy to make a bacon and eggs breakfast for us. In her tribute, our niece, Karen, also captured his passion for the camera. We loved watching his slide shows - they took a lot of effort and we were grateful he made that effort. I think the attached photos is how our family will, in addition to remembering his many other qualities, think about my big brother, Mo. Rest in piece. Your little sister, Anna

My condolences to Mrs Matassa and family Mr. Matassa first taught at Walkerville when I was in Grade 12. He had the rare gift of sweeping history from the pages of our textbooks and breathing life into it—turning lessons into living stories. I can still picture him, half-turned toward the window, as though he were watching history itself unfold beyond the glass and reporting it to us like a thoughtful correspondent of time. He possessed a distinctive way of developing his thoughts, jotting fragments of ideas with symbols and indentations in a manner that gave shape to insight and revealed a flow and progression. It was a simple, elegant discipline—one that impressed me deeply and that I continue to use throughout my personal and professional life. Beyond the classroom, Mr. Matassa (as the new teacher) got roped into sponsoring our strategy gaming club, joined by his soon-to-be wife—Margaret Trudeau’s twin, as we all thought—as our gracious patron. Our nickname for her was The Governor General. Many hours were spent in conversation, in listening, and in gaming—moments that helped shape both my thoughts and the person I would become. Though time and circumstance often draw us apart from those we admire, I have carried Mr. Matassa with me through the years—as a model of intellect, kindness, and integrity. His influence remains a quiet compass, reminding me of the kind of person I continue to strive to be. Thank you Sir
