Obituary of Aferdita (Drita) Nurka

In the early hours of March 4th, 2025, Aferdita (Drita) Nurka …… passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 89. She spent her final years at home surrounded by loving family and friends. She was the mother of Elvira Yakoub, Ariana Shehu, and Dean Yakoub, and loving grandmother of Donika Yakoub, Doruntina Yakoub, Valbona Yakoub, and Vincent Pinkenburg. 

 An accomplished Economics professor and previous Vice-Chancellor of the Institutit të Lartë të Arteve in Albania, she dedicated much of her life to the enrichment of others, educating several generations of students. She has also endured a great deal of hardship, demonstrating her profound resilience in the face a decade of oppression spent in interment. Even throughout that time, her steadfast kindness was evident to all. Upon immigrating to Canada, she nurtured and helped raise her three granddaughters. 

Drita lived true to her name, bringing light to the lives of all those she crossed paths with. She will be deeply missed by those who knew her.

Visitation will be held at Windsor Chapel Funeral Home (South Chapel) 3048 Dougall Avenue (519-253-7236) on Wednesday March 5, 2025 from 10:30 a.m. to the time of Prayer Service at 12:00 pm.  Interment to follow at Windsor Memorial Gardens, 1100 Division Road.
