Obituary of Velma Bohnert

BOHNERT, Velma (nee Eberwein)

1930-2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful wife, mother and grandma on January 5, 2025. Velma has been blessed with a very long and healthy life, to which we are all grateful. Over the past several weeks, she continued to be surrounded by family and friends to support her through her journey in reuniting with her beloved husband Carl, with whom she shared over 70 years of marriage. Our loving mother will be greatly missed by her daughter, Susan Bohnert Hamelin and husband Mark of Belle River, her son, Douglas Bohnert and wife Maureen of Port Elgin. Dear grandma of Joshua (Jordan), Jonathan (Cheyanne), Nikolaus (Breanne), Jacob (Kristi), Michael (Amber) and Rachel. Cherished great grandma to Charlie.

Born to the late Steve and Annie in Windsor, Ontario on June 29th, 1930, she was proud to be in her 95th year. She was always positive and sociable, with a smile on her face. She was never one to act her age. Young at heart, always up for fun and laughter, and holding steady at “75”.

Predeceased by her brother-in-law Martin (2004), wife Susanne Bohnert (2020), nephews Martin Jr. (2004) and Erwin (2007) all in Munich, Germany. Cousins Martin (2024) and Lucy Schneider (2019), and special Uncle Steve (1981) and Aunt Mary Hinek (2011) of Windsor. Survived by many cousins in Canada, Munich, Austria, to whom she has shared many warm and fun-filled memories.

Velma was known for her hospitality to friends and family. She devoted her time to hosting traditional family Holidays, summertime fish fries, milestone birthdays filled with strudel, cabbage rolls and Panama Jack. She credits her warm-heartedness and generosity to her Mother, Annie and her Aunt Mary. She could befriend anyone with her open and sincere way. She was a good listener and her curiosity to get to know people better was enhanced by her thoughtfulness and consideration. Being an only child, Velma was not short on “sisters”. Over the years, she developed a strong bond with her Ya-Ya girls, spending time at monthly luncheons and travelling on tours and cruises. Her BFF, Margaret Herbert, will always be in her heart and their long talks about life, love, family and current events will always be cherished. She was a matriarch for our family, dedicating her time to be the best mother anyone could ever hope for.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to everyone who touched her life at our time of need. The staff on the short stay unit at ESHC, and the Team at Hotel Dieu Grace Health Care - Palliative Care Unit demonstrated exceptional compassion and support for Velma and our family. Your kindness is irreplaceable, and thank you is not enough to define the outstanding work that you do day after day.
