Dear Family, Sisters & Friends of Sr. Mary of Loretto: I learned of Sr. Mary of Loretto's passing too late to visit at the funeral home. Her name brought back a flood of wonderful memories from my time at St. Mary's Academy. Sr. Mary of Loretto was my Grade 9 homeroom teacher during the school year 1968-1969. She was the first of wonderful teachers upon my start at high school. Of course I was nervous but Sister was well organized and seemed to recognize talents we had. It was Sister Mary of Loretto who asked my mother to encourage me to join the school yearbook staff under the direction of Sr. John Thomas. Those were wonderful Friday nights and Sr. Mary of Loretto would sometimes come down to visit us at work. To this day I enjoy arranging pictures. I also remember Religion and Family Life discussions we had in our homeroom class. And there are friends I still have from Gr. 9A-5. Years later, Sister was always eager to hear what I was up to if I met up with her. A few years ago Sr. Connie Harrington accompanied me to the residence so that I could visit with Sr. Mary of Loretto. It was a great visit though she was more frail. She had a knack, it seemed, to remain young at heart. I will always have a special spot in my heart for Sister Mary of Loretto. I carry with me some of the things she gave to many, in my teaching career. Please know that her dedication to students has brought joy into our lives as well as the adventure of new pathways. I am sure that God has welcomed such a woman of faith warmly into heaven this week. Sincerely, Patricia (Fortune) Wales email: rwales@mnsi.net

Sister Mary of Loretto was my grade school principal at Saint Paul's school in Sandwich West, now Lasalle in the early 60's. In retrospect I know that it must have been a difficult position for her, and I think she did a very fine job there. I work in Afghanistan, and am home in Alberta on leave now for a few weeks. Thoughts of my own mortality come upon me sometimes, due to the dangerous nature of my work. Yesterday I was reminiscing about my childhood, and feeling a bit lost and alone, as it seems everyone from that time in my life is gone. I never thought it possible that Sister Mary could still be alive after all this time as she seemed so old to me then, as adults seem to children. I noticed her obituary above that of a friend of mine which I was sending condolences to. It puts things into perspective for me, and I am grateful for it, and to her. Once again, she has taught/reminded me of an important life lesson it seems. And once again I am in her debt. May she bask in the warmth of the presence of God, to whom she was so faithfully wed for such a long time, forever. God bless Sister Mary of Loretto for having assisted greatly in making me the person that I have become.
